Can different foods have impact on your mood?


 Surprisingly, yes it does. People behave differently in certain situations especially under stress, some people stress eat while others stop eating at all. We all have wrapped our heads around the idea that junk food makes us happy somehow; this misconception should be cleared out. However, we have sidelined the harmful effects it has on our body, which can be physical or mental. Our brain works 24/7 and of course, it needs multiple kinds of nutrients to function. If we feed it with stuff like chocolates, burgers, pizzas (foods with high fats) it may not function at its fullest hence we feel awful or lethargic after consuming them. Think of our body like a car, which needs fuel to function, if we fuel it up with good quality food it will perform well and if we feed it with low quality being fats and what not, it will not perform at its full potential. Some detriments of consuming junk food are:

  • Long term health issues
  • Obesity
  •  Mood disorders

Healthy foods on the other hands have a handful of benefits but people seem to think that it does not make them elated. However, it does affect our mood in a positive way. When you start eating healthy, you develop a sense of taking good care of your body, which releases serotonin, the same chemical that releases when we eat chocolates and gives us a feeling of happiness. While eating junk food makes us, feel lazy and sometimes bloated that affects our mood in a bad way. Some foods that uplift your mood are:

  •  Fish
  • High protein foods such as beef
  •  Dark chocolate
  •  Strawberries
  • Berries
  • Oats
  •  Nuts and seeds
  • Coffee

You might think that these foods may not be that tasty but they definitely lift up your mood when you consume them. We should all consider changing our lifestyle through making these changes in our diet. Although junk foods are a treat for our tongue but we need to get rid of these foods:

  • Processed foods
  •  High sugar juices
  • Baked goods
  • Canned foods
  • Alcohol
  • French fries
  • Deep fried foods
  • Crisps and snacks

People tend to miss meals which has negative effects on their moods. Many people skip their breakfast which is the most important meal of the day the reason is that your body needs energy to work the entire day which of course comes from first meal of the day and when its missed, it affects your body as well as your mood in an awful way.

 If it’s hard to see your friends consuming all junk food and you cannot because you promised yourself to eat healthy again, well here’s what you have to do; eat everything in balanced proportions, even junk food should be enjoyed by all while they can. A balanced diet should be opted which should include junk food as well as healthy vegetables and salads which fulfill your nutrients because if not, it can lead to nutritional deficiency. Lastly, if you’re making changes in your diet be patient as change takes time and it may take even longer to notice the positive changes in your body and in your mood.
